I got these at a vegan food event. These were great! I dipped them in Daiya vegan ranch dressing. The batter made these taste much like fried chicken.
Welcome to Monk Island, a food blog with a new perspective. This blog documents my experiences as a roaming vegan with limited time, money, and resources. I search the land for simple, plant-based meals for one person, and I share those here with you. This blog is for herbivores on the go who don't live in the kitchen, don't have a kitchen, or don't have a home. No politics or extremist rants. Just peace, respect, and veggies.

Five Guys Fries with Malt Vinegar
I've cut back on my french fry consumption lately. Being in a food desert, I have limited options for lunch, so I went to Five Guys. This time I decided not to get the Cajun Fries. I got plain Little Fries with malt vinegar and a regular sweet tea.

Biscoff Cookies by Lotus
These are my new favorite cookies. They're not sickeningly sweet like other popular cookies, and that's why I like them so much. These go very well with hot tea and coffee. The label says "just a handful of natural ingredients", "no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives", "non-GMO", and "vegan friendly". This is a great snack or light breakfast!

Poker Trail Mix
I found this in the bulk goods at Sprouts. This included peanuts, Thompson raisins, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, almonds, cashews, soybean and/or peanut oil, and sunflower oil.

Daiya Cheeze Lover's Pizza
This is one of my favorite frozen pizzas. The cheeze doesn't melt as well as real cheese, but the taste is just as good and has a much cleaner mouthfeel. Also, Daiya cheeze doesn't have blood and pus in it, unlike real cheese. This pizza gets nice and crunchy on the bottom when cooked on the oven rack. This is a fantastic dinner!

Vegan Sausage Biscuits Made With LightLife Gimme Lean Meatless Veggie Sausage
I made some home-made vegan biscuits and fried some LightLife Gimme Lean Meatless Veggie Sausage. I pieced them together and drizzled 100% pure maple syrup on top. This was great!
The LightLife Gimme Lean Meatless Veggie Sausage is a great product. This is my first time trying it. This tastes enough like the real thing to satisfy but not so much that it's scary to a vegan. This is actually better than the real thing. First of all, this is not the ground up left-over scraps of a animal carcasses. Secondly, it's not as salty and greasy. Thirdly, it has a better texture that does not include those gross cartilage and vein chunks. This product is milder in flavor than the real thing, so I recommend using a thicker slice if used in a biscuit. When eaten without a biscuit, it's perfectly tasty as a side item. I'm not into meat replacements, but this one will be something I'll eat again!

Sluggo's Burrito at Sluggo's in Chattanooga TN
This was my first time trying Sluggo's in Chattanooga. Sluggo's specializes in freshly prepared vegan foods. They make all the sauces and faux meats in their kitchen. They use organic foods when possible. That all sounds fantastic to me!
I wasn't sure what would be the best menu items. I wanted to pick something safe, so I chose the Sluggo's Burrito. The menu says it's "grilled and filled with your choice of pinto or black beans, yellow rice, and salsa, topped with lettuce, homemade vegan cheezy sauce, and lime-soy cream. Served with chips and salsa". I added avocado and a cup of Harry's Homemade Chili. I'm not sure why I didn't receive chips and salsa. Maybe the addition of the chili was considered to be a substitute.
This was a large burrito. Everything about this meal was excellent! My favorite highlights included the refreshing and slightly tart lime-soy cream which tasted similar to ranch dressing, the creamy vegan cheeze which had a wonderful nutty flavor, the fresh black beans, and the hearty side of chunky chili. The tortilla was grilled and gave the burrito a slight greasy spoon flavor similar to that of foods cooked in old skillets. I'm not really into the grilled foods, but it did give the burrito another interesting layer of flavor. I would have preferred more vegan cheese, not because it needed it but because it was just so good. This meal was worth the price which was about $13. I would have liked to try the chips and salsa. It's no big deal though. I had plenty of food.
I really liked the food, but I was a unsure of the cleanliness of the restaurant. My first impression upon arrival from the rear lot was that it looked dumpy. Much of Chattanooga has a worn down dystopian appearance, and it was the back entrance, so I didn't let that scare me away. I climbed the deck stairs to the main floor and the brightly painted interior gave me more hope. The colorful minimalist artwork on the walls was impressive and unique, but the overall atmosphere of the dining room reminded me of the break room of a manufacturing facility. The incomplete detailing and building maintenance made it clear that the focus was on making great plant-based foods.
Overall, I enjoyed my visit to Sluggo's. I received great food with friendly service. There are many items on the menu that I'd like to try in the future. I'll try to return soon!
