Back To Nature Peanut Butter Granola Clusters is vegan, and it has a great taste and texture. It is a bit sweet though. When buying any granola product, one ingredient I look for is honey. I prefer not to eat bee vomit. This flavor didn't have it. I like the packaging too, because this fits so nicely in my backpack.
Welcome to Monk Island, a food blog with a new perspective. This blog documents my experiences as a roaming vegan with limited time, money, and resources. I search the land for simple, plant-based meals for one person, and I share those here with you. This blog is for herbivores on the go who don't live in the kitchen, don't have a kitchen, or don't have a home. No politics or extremist rants. Just peace, respect, and veggies.

Vegan Poverty Noodles
Here's another plant-based poverty meal. This is a vegan version of something I had to eat when times where not so good. I would eat buttered noodles with black pepper. Yes. That's it. Noodles, butter, and pepper.
But this vegan version includes organic noodles, Earth Balance butter alternative, and black pepper. I got fancy and sprinkled it with Bragg's Nutritional Yeast. This is still very cheap, easy, and quick.

Amy's Light & Lean Spaghetti Italiano
Here's another Amy's meal. Of course it was good! Everything Amy's makes is good. This was my first time trying the Spaghetti Italiano. The "meatballs" had plenty of flavor but had a falafel flavor that seemed out of place. That's a minor issue. This was a great meal, as expected!

Dang Savory Seaweed
This is my first time trying Dang Sticky Rice Chips. These are good! The first bite confused me. It tasted fishy. I forgot it was seaweed flavor. After the third bite I was ready to eat the whole bag. This is a great vegan snack! I'll be buying these again.

Sabra Taco Inspired Hummus
I know I've posted hummus on this blog a few times, but I need to let you know about this amazing new flavor. Taco Inspired Hummus is my new favorite. It works perfectly with organic blue tortilla chips. This is another great non-GMO snack!

Home-made Vegan Mexican-style Plate
This meal started out as stuffed poblano peppers, but my peppers fell apart during peeling. I made the best of it and here's what I had.
I roasted the peppers in the oven and removed the seeds and skins. The other ingredients are simply what I intended to stuff the peppers with before the peppers fell into pieces. There's some vegan refried beans, brown rice, fresh tomatoes from my organic non-GMO garden, and cilantro.
Look at this meal! This is heaven on a plate! And it's all plant material!

Home-made Vegan Southern Plate with Garden Okra and Green Beans
I just picked some green beans and okra from my organic non-GMO garden and made this delicious, comforting Southern plate. This is the best vegan food available. It's fresh, clean, cheap, and mostly healthy. Nothing on this plate was difficult to make. It took about an hour to cook all of this. The cost was almost nothing because I grew half of it and the other half is poverty ingredients. The taste was excellent, because I'm really getting good at this. What an excellent plant-based meal!

Dr. McDougall's Vegan Tortilla Soup
This is my favorite Dr. McDougall's vegan soup flavor. If you haven't tried this brand, start with this one!
Starlite Cuisine Vegan Bean & Cheese Enchiladas
This was a really good enchilada meal. This had a fresh, authentic flavor. There was a good amount of sauce, and the corn tortilla tasted like real corn. This is a vegan, non-GMO product. I will be buying this again!
Dragon Fruit (Pitahaya)
Dragon fruit is difficult to describe. It's a really weird tropical fruit. The exterior is bright pink with soft pedals. The inside is bright white and juicy with tiny seeds throughout. It has a light melon flavor, and the seeds are slightly slimy like chia seeds. It's very refreshing.
Rhythm Superfoods Beet Chips
Rhythm Superfoods makes good beet chips. These were excellent, but the price was high, and the bag didn't have that many chips in it. I love the product but can't regularly spend so much money on my snacks. I may buy them again when I get a real craving for them.

Sensible Portions Veggie Chips
The name Sensible Portions may not be right for this snack. I ate much more than a sensible portion. That's how good these are!
These look like light green Pringles potato chips, but they're slightly thicker with a milder crunch. The flavor is very addictive, and I ate half the tube before making a conscious effort to save some for later. This was a delicious snack for my mountain biking adventure.

Amy's Chinese Noodles & Veggies
Here's another winner from Amy's. This is a great vegan meal. It's organic and non-GMO.
A Vegan Snack at Tims Ford State Park Marina
Lay's Barbecue potato chips are vegan! Gatorade Orange is vegan! But watch out. Most other Lay's flavored chips contain milk, and I've seen some Gatorade flavors that contain whey.

Bold Pesto Spring Rolls
Anyone who thinks raw vegan food is bland and tasteless needs to try my Bold Pesto Spring Rolls.
I used rice paper and stuffed it with fresh spinach leaves, orange bell pepper, my home-made bold pesto, and prepackaged broccoli slaw. Wow! The raw garlic and pepper give this a real kick. This had my tongue tingling for over an hour!
My vegan pesto is made with:
a handful of fresh basil
2 cloves of raw garlic
a handful of raw cashews
a splash of lime juice
about 3-4 tablespoons of olive oil

Upton's Naturals Bar-B-Que Jackfruit
I wanted to try something new, so I grabbed some Upton's Naturals Bar-B-Que Jackfruit and some slaw ingredients to make a vegan barbecue sandwich.
This was the final product; a delicious pile of plant-based food that tastes as good or even better than meat. The vegan slaw details are posted separately if you're interested in that.
Upton's has a good product here. It tastes like a barbecue product, but I wouldn't say it tastes like meat. Real meat has a nasty, oily stickiness and sits heavy on the stomach. This has a lighter, cleaner, fresher taste and texture. The only thing is that it was a bit dry. Once I added the vegan slaw it was perfect. As far as I know, no one died a traumatic death for this meal, this meal will not increase my chances of getting colon cancer, and this meal will not give me atherosclerosis.

Home-made Vegan Slaw
This is a cheap, quick, and easy version of vegan slaw. Just mix the ingredients shown. I prefer mine a bit dry. You can add a splash of white vinegar if you want a juicier, tangy slaw.
Spicy Fishless Wrap
I used Gardein Fishless Filets with hydroponic butter lettuce, Veganaise, Huy Fong Sriracha Sauce, and a Toufayan wrap to make this tasty meal.

Vegan Camp Snack at Monte Sano State Park
Boiled peanuts and Yuengling! I had to drive down the mountain to the Star Market to get these, so I guess that's cheating.
Tropicaleo Puerto Rican Kitchen in Birmingham AL
I stopped by Tropicaleo Puerto Rican Kitchen and found some vegan treasures.
This is the Tropibowl with the beans and rice option plus two vegan sauces. The house sauce is Vegenaise and ketchup. The tamarind vinaigrette was mild and slightly sweet. This bowl included white rice and kidney beans topped with grilled eggplant. This tasted fresh with mild flavors. The beans had some other delicious plant material in there, but I couldn't tell what it was. It looked like carrots or potatoes.
The Tropibowl also has a spinach option. This one is just grilled eggplant and spinach with tamarind sauce.
I also tried the Pineapple Slaw. This was crunchy, tangy, and slightly sweet. This was excellent.
This was my first visit to Tropicaleo Puerto Rican Kitchen. My lunch was very good, so I may be back if I'm in the area. It's in an older shopping center in the Avondale community. The surrounding area is interesting with huge abandoned 100 year old houses and modern pubs. Tropicaleo's dining area looks much like an ice cream shop. It's neat and clean with pastel colors. The menu has gluten free and vegan items clearly marked with GF and V, and there's plenty of vegan options. Fried plantains seem to be a big part of the menu. This is not a vegetarian restaurant, so there's pork and chicken items for the meat eaters. The service was friendly and helpful. This seems to be a cozy, peaceful place to eat. There was no music playing and no loud kitchen noises during my visit. Overall, this was a good visit and I would recommend this place to anyone.

Crescent Cafe Juice Bar in Monteagle TN
While on a biking adventure I discovered Crescent Cafe in Monteagle TN. They have vegan refreshments!
My Choco Loco smoothie and veggie straws were really good, and the lady at the window was friendly. This place apparently gets a lot of business from the bike trail. It took me almost a half hour to get a photo of this place without including other people and bicycles.
Crescent Cafe is located between Monteagle and Sewanee, home of the beautiful campus of the University of the South. The menu is small but appears to be vegan. Crescent Cafe is an old RV, and there's plenty of lawn furniture and picnic tables in a shaded area in front of the RV. I enjoyed my visit and hope to return for more refreshments during another mountain biking adventure.

O'Zone Pizza Pub in Pensacola FL
For this meal I went to O'Zone Pizza Pub. It's a regular pizza pub, but they have vegan options. I had the Veg Out minus feta and substituted the cheese for vegan cheese.
This vegan pizza included typical veggie pizza toppings. The crust had a really good texture; it was crunchy on the outside and fluffy inside. I was told it gets coated with a vegan garlic oil. The pizza sauce was perfectly seasoned. Everything tasted fresh. I ordered some roasted garlic on the side (not pictured) and that made this an awesome meal!
O'Zone Pizza Pub is a strange little place built inside what was once the basement kitchen of the old Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola FL. The large stone Gothic Revival building was completed in 1915 and was the first hospital in Pensacola. It was later turned into a school. Today it looks like one of those creepy insane asylums in horror movies, especially in the more abandoned areas. (I went early on a Sunday. Almost no one was there. Creepy!) O'Zone appears to take several rooms of the old hospital. The bar area was the kitchen and still has the aged white tile and tall, narrow, metal-framed windows. Its worn, industrial, institutional vibe is mixed with weird beach art, rock music posters, and a large black velvet painting. O'Zone has a good selection of beer and obscure older rock music.
I received friendly service from the server and bar tender. It was like visiting friends of a friend. My meal was excellent, and the environment, especially around O'Zone, was unforgettable. This is a family friendly establishment. I would recommend this place to anyone.

A Lunch at Zoe's Kitchen
I went to Zoe's Kitchen for some delicious plant food. I ordered the falafel with skhug sauce instead of the tzatziki sauce, a side of turmeric rice, and braised white beans. When ordered this way it should be vegan.......unless somebody in the kitchen is nasty. The beans and rice were excellent.
I always check the food before I eat. This is why. Hidden under my falafel was this nasty pus-looking stuff.
I guess they messed up and used the wrong sauce at first, then stuck the ruined falafel in my bowl. This is disgusting! Why is it okay to put bodily excretions in my food and hide it underneath as if I would not notice? I returned this "food" immediately.
If any non-vegans are reading this, I just want to let you understand how nasty this is from my perspective. Imagine a stranger walks up and squeezes out some bodily fluids onto your food. Pick a fluid of your choice. Nasty, right? I try to keep this blog positive. I want us all to live peacefully together. To do that we must be conscious of other people and how we affect people around us. Hiding bodily fluids under people's food is not respectful or kind. Why not just grab some more falafel? It's very simple. We all live here on Earth. We're all brothers and sisters sharing the same space. Just be nice. Serve me as if you were serving yourself and I'll do the same, even if you are omnivore. I understand omnivores because I lived as one for decades. I personally give you respect and kindness. I would like the same. See how easy this is? We can all get along! My hippie rant will now end. It will be a while before I go back to Zoe's.
